I used the procedure described in
http://awebfactory.com.ar/node/106 and
http://www.webdevelopersjournal.com/articles/favicon.html
to create a favicon. Namely:
Create a 16x16 pixel graphic in xpm format with GIMP
Use tool xpm2wico to create favicon.
Name it favicon.ico and upload to the website home directory.
